Ken Green (MA 2002) is teaching writing and literature courses full time at Western Iowa Tech. in Sioux City, Iowa.
Ted Wilharm (MA 2002) is teaching Composition I and II at the Community College of Denver and the Community College of Aurora.
Penni Pearson (PhD 2001) is an assistant professor, tenure track, at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, and Melissa Van Vuuren (BA 2002) is a master's student and teaching assistant at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Jim Balakier received an Advance Governor’s Technology grant this summer for British Literature II.
Norma Wilson's review of Carter Revard's book Winning the Dustbowl was published in Great Plains Quarterly, 22, 2 Spring 2002): 129-30. She conducted a South Dakota Rainbow Project workshop as the final segment of "The Stories, the Science and the Spirit," at the Discovery Center, Pierre, SD, June 13. She presented "An Overview of Contemporary American Indian Literature" June 25 as part of the "Gaining Perspectives Teachers'Institute" conducted by the Institute of Indian Studies at USD. She was a writer in residence from July 3-30 at Fundacion Valparaiso, Mojacar, Spain. She has also been selected to represent South Dakota colleges and universities on the South Dakota Center for the Book Board of Advisors. Friday, September 20, 2002
Dennis Sjolie was invited to present "Using Music to Teach ESL: A Pedagogical Approach" at the Closer Connections Conference held in Sioux Falls, May 30-31, 2002. He has also been invited to present his research "Re-Examining Discipline Specific Approaches to ESL Class Structure" at the 14th Annual Conference on the Role of the Imagination in Language Learning, scheduled in April 2003, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Professor Norma Wilson read some new poetry, inspired by her recent trip to Spain, at the Vermillion Literary Project's August 29th reading at the Coffee Shop Gallery in downtown Vermillion. She was one of several readers at this informal gathering. Other readers included Katie Gleich, Brad Soule, Jennifer Soule, Kitty Dyer, Joel Waters, Marcella Remund, Dave Thum, Melissa Houghton, and Casey Horpedahl. Elliot Harmon, who was the host at this event, also read some of his work. The next VLP open-mic reading is scheduled for Thursday, September 26th, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Coffee Shop Gallery, 24 W. Main Street, in Vermillion. Bring your poems, short-short fiction, and other creations to share or just come and listen. This event is free and open to the public. |
