Upcoming VLP Events: Writers Group Meeting Nov. 19 and Poetry Reading Nov. 21
2nd meeting of the new VLP Writers Group Tue. Nov. 19th, at 7 p.m. at the Washington Street Arts Center, on the corner of Washington and Cedar Streets, a few blocks north of the courthouse, in Vermillion. These meetings are free and open to all interested writers in the USD community, Vermillion, and surrounding areas. Bring writing to share . . . . receive and offer feedback . . . possibly dabble in some new writing while there . . . . and enjoy the comradery that comes with hanging out with other writers.
VLP Open-Mic Reading and Poetry Slam Thur. Nov. 21st, at 7 p.m. at the Coffee Shop Gallery, 24 W. Main Street, Vermillion. This event is free and open to the public.
The open-mic reading begins at 7 p.m. Anyone can share their poetry, short-short fiction, musical creations, and other creative works. This part of the reading will be especially inviting to new writers, writers working in different genres, and those who prefer a non-competitive venue.
The poetry slam will begin immediately after the open-mic reading ends (approximately 8 p.m.). This is a competition for poets! Each participant will have three minutes in which to read/recite a poem, with five judges in the audience scoring the poems on a scale of 0 to 10. If there are enough participants, there may be a second round. The winner will receive a prize of somewhat dubious merit and the honor of wearing the VLP Poet Gladiator Belt!
