Faculty News:
During the National Writing Project's Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, on November 18th, Michelle Rogge Gannon co-facilitated two workshops for technology liaisons, "Being and Becoming Technology Liaisons: A First-Timer's Workshop" and "Developing TunneL (TL) Vision for Your Site." Michelle also talked with other TLs at round table sessions, about her experiences as a facilitator and planner of the NWP eight-week Electronic Writing Marathon, during the Leadership and Technology General Session for technology liaisons. On November 19th, Michelle co-presented at a session on "Writing and Responding in the Summer Institute," focusing on the NWP E-Anthology. On the 20th, Michelle, as a member of the NWP's E-Anthology E-Team, participated in a planning meeting for next summer's E-Anthology. In August and September, working with Karen McComas of the Marshall University Writing Project in West Virginia, Michelle co-facilitated the eight-week NWP E-Writing Marathon, in which a group of NWP educators from around the country explored and wrote in a different technology environment each week, including two different weblogs, Tapped In, Nicenet, the NWP E-Anthology, LinguaMOO, and AIM (instant messaging). Every Monday, they met online at LinguaMOO for live discussions to discuss their experiences in the different tech environments. For details, see http://blogs.writingproject.org/mooclass . Norma Wilson will attend a booksigning and luncheon for authors published by the Center for Western Studies, at Augustana College, Saturday, December 4, from 10:30-3:30. Her essay, "Spirit Mound, the Natives, and Lewis and Clark," is included in "The Lewis and Clark Expedition: Then and Now," Ed. David Kvernes, 2004. Norma Wilson's review of Marjorie Weinberg's "The Real Rosebud: The Triumph of a Lakota Woman," has been published in "Great Plains Quarterly," 24, 4 (Fall 2004): 294-95. Lee Ann Roripaugh's poem, "Notes on the Cusp of a Dangerous Year," has been accepted for publication by "North American Review". In early November, Lee Ann traveled to the M/MLA Conference in St. Louis, MO, where she was one of four prose writers selected to read their work as part of the Creative Writing: Prose Session panel. She read her short story, "Jazz Cannibals." Lee Ann also co-presented a paper co-authored with Susan Wolfe, "Witches and Femmes: Packaging Lesbians for The L-Word." On November 16, Lee Ann gave a poetry reading at the Horse Barn Art Center in Sioux Falls, sponsored by the Sioux Empire Arts Council and funded by the South Dakota Humanities Council. Graduate Updates: Jami Olson (MA 2004) and her husband, Nathan Olson, welcome their first child, Valori Ann, who was born October 26, 2004. Patti DiMond’s paper entitled “Breaking Stereotypes by Reclaiming Indian Identity in Sherman Alexie’s Indian Killer” will be presented at the Southwest Texas Popular Culture Conference in Albuquerque, NM on February 10-12, 2005. Chris Bloss, PhD candidate’s short story titled “Bright Lights and Pawn Shops” has been published in the magazine The Chiron Review. Thursday, November 04, 2004
Norma Wilson presents Harrington Lecture November 4th, 2004
English professor Norma Wilson presents the 52nd Harrington Lecture entitled, “Millennium Heartbeat” tonight (Thursday, 11/4) at 7:00 p.m. in Farber Hall, Old Main, on the USD campus. Refreshments will be served following the lecture and at Norma’s request, the Oscar Howe Gallery will be open for your enjoyment.
