Everyone, join us for the Vermillion Literary Project Poetry Slam, featuring award-winning, professional writer Ed Allen, on Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m., at the Coffee Shop Gallery, 24 W. Main Street, downtown Vermillion. Prizes will be awarded to the slam winners. Slam poets should bring at least three poems. Our feature writer, Edward Allen, grew up in the Northeast, graduated from Goddard College in Vermont, and received his MA and PhD from Ohio University. Before coming to the University of South Dakota, he taught at colleges in Tennessee, Oklahoma, and California. In 1994-95 he was a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Krakow, Poland. He has published two novels, STRAIGHT THROUGH THE NIGHT and MUSTANG SALLY, as well as THE HANDS-ON FICTION HANDBOOK. His short fiction and poetry have appeared in such magazines as THE NEW YORKER, GQ, STORY, PRAIRIE SCHOONER, and THE INDIANA REVIEW. In 2003 his collection of stories, ATE IT ANYWAY, was named co-winner of the Flannery O'Connor Short Fiction Award.
